    "K-20" Fr. 1381 Engraving Error

"K-20" Plate Letter Engraving Error Fr. 1381 50¢ Fifth Issue PCGS Fine 12.
This note at first glance appears to be a common circulated Crawford Fifth Issue 50¢ Fractional. However, on closer examination, it is actually a "K-20" engraving error. True engraving errors on Fractionals are very rare with only two other types known, the "no pearls" 3¢ note and the alternate placed "a" 25¢ Fessenden note. This error was first described in an article by Rick Melamed in the March/April 2015 Whole No. 296 issue of Paper Money, the Society of Paper Money Collectors. Researcher Melamed postulates that the error occurred when the engraver of the plate initially etched an "H" and then realized that the plate position of the note called for a letter "K." Instead of destroying the plate and starting over, it appears the engraver just engraved an extra vertical line. This variety was not discovered for over 140 years. This is not surprising as only 1 of a possible 432 plate number/letter combinations can have a "K-20" engraving error.
