    Description

Bristol Board Set from F.E. Spinner's Personal Collection

F.E. Spinner's Personal Set of Bristol Board Proofs.
This was previously Lot 1091 from our January 1997 auction of the Milt Friedberg collection. It was described there, "Possibly the most famous and best pedigreed Fractional Currency items in existence. This group was originally owned by Spinner himself and was passed on to his grandson Francis Elias Spinner Harvey. The group consists of seven pieces, each printed on a thick, soft, heavy cardboard similar to modern desk blotter paper. The group consists of the following Milton numbers with their PMG grades: 2E10R.2 Choice Uncirculated 63, minor stains; 2E50R.11 Choice Uncirculated 63; 3E5R.1 Choice Uncirculated 64; 3E10R.2 Choice Uncirculated 63; 3E50F.7 Choice Uncirculated 63; 3E50R.3 Uncirculated 62, stained; and 3E50R.4 Uncirculated 62, stained. Each is a razor sharp impression, printed under extremely heavy pressure and lacking bronze or surcharges of any kind. Each piece was printed directly on the card, with no intervening India paper. All seven pieces are extreme rarities, although two in particular should be mentioned: The Third Issue Fifty Cent Spinner Face Milton 3R50F.7 of which only two examples are thought to exist, this one and one other whose whereabouts have been unknown for decades, and the Third Issue Fifty Cent Type II Back Milton 3E50R.4. The Fifty Cent Spinner Face has been hand autographed by Spinner in the place where his signature would properly belong (no Register's signature is present on the note). The Fifty Cent Third Issue Type II Back is unknown as a normal Specimen note, and is represented by only a handful of unbronzed thin-paper specimen, plus perhaps three other Bristol Board Proofs. No more than four pieces are known for any of these seven cardboard proofs. And none have been available for purchase in decades. Along with this lot are handwritten notations of previous owners referring to rarity and pedigree." It's interesting to note that the Spinner signature was applied in Spinner's final years, very likely in the late 1880s, when his hand had become shaky. The notes are now graded and encapsulated in PMG holders along with the appropriate paperwork. The grades all range from 62 to 64. PMG has done an outstanding job of organizing and holdering this unique and irreplaceable set. It was not an easy task. (Total: 7 notes)
