Milton 4E15F.1 15¢ Fourth Issue Essay Gem New. From our January 1997 Sale of the Friedberg Collection, where it was described: "This early stage plate-proof, for the 15¢ Fourth Issue note, is printed on India paper with one inch wide margins outside the design. The India paper was printed after having been mounted to a still larger card. This method caused the entire outline of the plate to be deeply impressed into the card. Three elements are present: the boarder design, which is complete and as-used on the regular issue note; the '15' counter at the upper right of the note, which is complete in its engine-turnings, but lacks the fill-in finish; and the portrait, which is considerably larger, although seemingly identical to that used on the final note." Unique to our best knowledge, and a strikingly handsome item. Milt had acquired this piece in January of 1985 from Dr. Glenn Jackson. Tom acquired it in our January 1997 Sale.
