Milton 3E25F.2a 25¢ Third Issue Experimental Gem New. Although this is a different note, it is identical in every respect to lot 1093 from our January 1997 Sale. This note has the plate position indicator "a" and is of particular interest due to the use of the standard, half-moon cancels as well as three full circle cancels. Research has indicated that the half-moon cancel punches have been traced to the Bureau and the rarely used three pie-shaped cancels have been traced to the Auditor's office. These full circle cancels, which are found only on a very few Essays and Experimentals, have not as yet had their source traced. This flawless piece is printed on extremely heavy fiber paper with its bold embossing plainly evident on the back. It is one of only three known examples, one of which is in the Smithsonian.
