    Description

    Very Early 50¢ Paste-Up Proof

Milton 2E50F.3 50¢ Second Issue Plate Progress Proof Paste-Up About New. This unique note was included in the Encyclopedia based on its listing as item #3 in Ed Frossard's October 1, 1893 price list, where it was asterisked as unique to that collection. The whereabouts of this piece had been unknown from that time until February of 1982, when Superior sold the Fraser Collection. The note is well margined and problem free save for glue stains from mounting. The note as originally printed lacked the corner counters, the large 50's to either side of Washington's portrait, and the word "FIFTY" in the ribbon to the left of the key. The area for Washington's portrait was also printed blank. These design elements were subsequently pasted on the note from another source. The Washington portrait that is used here is not the same one that was chosen for the issue. The enabling act printed on the note is the very rare July 17, 1862 date which was the postage currency enabling act. This was changed before the final notes were issued to the correct date of March 3, 1863. Only the very earliest Second Issue experimental pieces utilized the July 17 date. This piece realized $1,760 as lot 1042 in our January 1997 Friedberg Sale and should more than double that this evening.
