Five Cent First Issue Essay in Black on White

Milton 1E5F.3b 5¢ First Issue Essay Gem New. This strikingly beautiful note is printed in black ink on pure white paper. It is identical to the finished design but for ink and paper color, and the fact that the outer frame line is a double line rather than the adopted single. First Issue Essays have particular allure as they are the very roots of Fractional Currency. It is unfortunate that so few of them exist, because most collectors will never have the opportunity to own a single piece. In the field of Fractional Currency, prices are much lower than in most other areas of numismatics, and excessively rare or unique items fit into the budgets of the majority of active collectors. Still, most will never own a First Issue Essay, not on account of price, but simply because the number of collectors desiring one outstrips the number of pieces in existence.
