1874-1876, 10c Fifth Issue, Meredith, Fr-1265, VF. This "Short Key" Meredith note is remarkable mainly for the evidence of an old overdrawing of the portrait, representative of "Satirical" Fractional notes. These turn of the century folk-art notes, similar to "Hobo Nickels," were drawn over in pen and ink. Caricatures were most frequently drawn over 10c Fifth Issue notes, and represented soldiers, priests, politicians, and other cartoon-like figures. This note appears to have once been overdrawn as a Lady in a Bonnet, but has lost most of its inking. What remains is an unsightly white and gray stain over much of the portrait. The balance of the note is slightly aged with strong handling along the margins. There are a few corner tips and pinholes and the Treasury Seal has darkened to an almost brown color.
