Description

Ex: Grinnell, Schermerhorn, and Oakes - Unique Serial Number One $20 1891 Treasury Note

Fr. 375 Serial Number One $20 1891 Treasury Note PCGS Very Fine 35.
A true number one note, as this is the only 1891 $20 Treasury to carry this number. It will by definition remain unique forever. Another spectacular piece from the Dean Oakes Serial Number 1 Collection and again with an illustrious pedigree. The earliest reported appearance of this note was when it was lot 290 in the Grinnell sale of November 25, 1944. When the heated bidding ended, the note settled for $42, lower than the $65 estimate. It was purchased by Robert Schermerhorn and did not appear again until a New York sale on St. Patrick's Day of 1993 where it was purchased by Dean Oakes. The note itself is a real beauty. The VF 35 grade is exactly accurate by today's standards, although the note was called extremely fine when it first appeared 73 years ago. The margins are wonderful, the colors and print quality as good as it gets, and the note overall has the look of a high end XF. One of the highlights of Dean's incredible collection. The vignette of John Marshall is extremely well printed. Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, serving from 1801-1835, prior to that he was also Secretary of State from 1800-1801. He is one of only three civilians to appear on the Treasury Note series, the others being Stanton and Seward. All of the others were Civil War generals, with the exception of Farragut, an admiral.
