Stunning Near-Gem $5,000 Federal Reserve Note

Fr. 2221-G $5,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A simply stunning note that we have had the privilege to offer again tonight. When we offered it as part of the Kiawah Collection, we described it, "A well centered and very bright $5000 note which is very close to the elusive Gem grade, having received a rating of Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ by PMG. The reverse is slightly shifted, which likely prompted the Choice rather than the Gem designation. The last $5000 we offered at this grade level was in our recent FUN auction and realized a strong $223,250. To be sure, that piece was from the scarcer Dallas district but with the increased interest in these high denomination "trophy notes", we would not be surprised to see this note, which is a truly scarce item in this grade, approach that same level." It realized $164,500 in that auction, with a couple other $5,000 notes nearing it in terms of condition also topping $200,000 since then. Most recently, we offered a PMG 64 without the Exceptional Paper Quality descriptor in our September Long Beach Auction for $141,000. What was omitted from our last offering is the fact that this note sits alone atop the PMG census. Any survey of the population reports reveals how few of these high denominations have earned an EPQ or PPQ descriptor. At their value levels, the temptation for dealers and collectors to "improve" them leaves few wholly original examples for collectors to fight over.
