First Ever Offering 1928 $50 Dallas Federal Reserve Replacement Note
Hyman S. Lebman Cash Hoard Rarity

Fr. 2100-K* $50 1928 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Very Fine 20.
While discovery notes gravitate towards our auctions, few come with such an interesting back story as this note. Replacement notes for 1928 $50s up until today were known for all districts except Dallas. While survivors for most districts are exceedingly rare, collectors have been waiting patiently for a note from the Dallas district to become available. The Standard Guide to Small-Size U.S. Paper Money lists just one known survivor until now. That note, serial number 3342 has been listed in a few editions of the guide, but has never been publicly offered at auction.

This note is part of the Hyman S. Lebman Cash Hoard, with an incredible back story narrated in detail at the beginning our National Bank Note session. The note sat in a safe deposit box since the early 1930s along with a mass of other Dallas FRNs, Texas Nationals, and notes attributed to Baby Face Nelson. Lebman was a gunsmith who specialized in modifications that organized criminals use to inflict fear. The direct connection to Baby Face Nelson's last visit to Lebman gives the note a backstory that is rarely matched in numismatics. It is a stroke of luck that such a monster Small Size rarity would emerge from such an illustrious cash hoard. The note is wholesome with a deep green overprint and serial number K00003790*.
