    Description

Changeover Pair Fr. 851a/851b $5 1914 Federal Reserve Notes PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 63 PPQ; Unc 62 PPQ.
Our original description of this lot in September 2005 reads, "This changeover pair began its numismatic journey with William A. Philpott. It is the only changeover pair within the $5 (1914) FRNs that we know about." It is still the only $5 1914 FRN changeover pair that we are aware of. The first printed acknowledgment of changeover pairs that we can find was by Farran Zerbe on page 672 of the November 1928 issue of The Numismatist. This was shortly followed by William Philpott on page 727 of the December 1928 The Numismatist, where Philpott also observed the same phenomena of consecutive serial numbered notes from two different series. They described not only changeover pairs, but also reverse changeover pairs in their letters to The Numismatist. Also, neither of these numismatists actually had names for these numismatic novelties. Today, we not only have names for them, but also a devoted following. (Total: 2 notes)
