Inverted Overprint Hawaii $5-One of Two Known

Fr. 2302 $5 1934A Hawaii Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
A simply spectacular error which combines rarity, grade, and desirability as do few examples in any branch of numismatics. This Hawaii note, with its brown Treasury seal and serial numbers inverted, is one of a consecutive pair unearthed by Philadelphia dealer Harry Forman in the 1970's. One piece has resided in a major New York error collection since it sold in 1988, with the other, which is the note offered here, was obtained by our consignor in a 2008 auction for just under $20,000. It is perhaps the greatest of any small size error, as the grade is commensurate with its rarity, having been assigned the Gem 65PPQ designation by PCGS. This flawless example is destined to become the centerpiece of the collection it will enter today, and one fortunate individual will own an error that will excite even the most jaded of collectors. Our estimate may well prove conservative, as the only other specimen remains out of reach and will likely remain so for many years to come.
