    Barlett Misspelled Town Name Error

    "Barlett, TX" - $10 1929 Ty. 1 The First NB Ch. # 5422
An exciting recent discovery as the town name of "Bartlett" is misspelled as "Barlett". This major National Bank Note error was the subject of a Peter Huntoon front page article in the December 2010 issue of Bank Note Reporter as we reported the finding directly to him. The First NB was sent 459 sheets of Type 1 $10's and 115 sheets of Type 1 $20's from October 1929 to February 1930. These shipments contained the error notes. The bank eventually notified the Comptroller of the Currency of the error. According to the National Currency and Bond Ledgers, the Comptroller ordered that sheets in their possession (Type 1 $10's serial numbers 460-1234 and Type 1 $20's serial numbers 116-422) were to be cancelled and a new logotype plate be made without charge to the bank. A study of the different major censuses for Nationals reveal that all reported serial numbers for this bank to date are for notes that have serial numbers above the numbers for the cancelled sheets. This makes this $10 the first and only note to be documented with a serial number within the range of the misspelling errors. It took over 80 years for one of these great error notes to be documented within the collecting community, even with William Philpott, the dean of Texas Nationals, living just three counties away when these error notes were circulating. A true trophy note in both the field of errors and Nationals and destined to be added to a great collection or to become the cornerstone note for a new collector. The third party label mentions staining on the back which pales in comparison to what this note represents, which is one great error. PMG Very Fine 25 with the added label description of "Title Error: Barlett."

    Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
