Inverted Back Error Fr. 1098 $100 1914 Federal Reserve Note PMG
Choice Very Fine 35.This Cleveland C-note is the only large size $100 inverted back available in the collector community. There is another $100 inverted back known, a New York Fr. 1088, but it has been in government hands for a long time. In fact, it was transferred from the Treasury Department to the Smithsonian Institution in 1978 when the former sent their locked away holdings to the latter for storage and display purposes. Therefore, the Fr. 1088 will remain forever beyond the reach of collectors. The attractive mid-grade, comment free inverted back error in this lot made its first appearance in the William Donlon auction of September, 1972 as lot 592 in the supplement session where it brought all of $260. Times have certainly changed since then as both errors and rarity have greatly appreciated over the last five decades in the paper money field. Its next public offering was at the ANA auction of 1977 which was the most extensive paper money auction of the 1970s, if not the following decade, too. Its third offering was 23 years later at our January, 2000 FUN auction. We predicted in our description a five figure price and it took a winning bid of $14,300 to bring this unique in collector hands inverted back $100 home. Today, collectors are able to compete once again for this unique error. Therefore, if rarity and desirability are any guide in the current robust market, our estimate could well prove conservative in the quest to make this rarity the centerpiece of the next collection that it enters.
