Fr. 87* $5 1907 Legal Tender PCGS Very Fine 25.A fantastic note in all respects, and one of the key items in Richard Merlau's inverted reverse collection. This piece is one of only two $5 Legal Tender star inverts known, and is by far the better of the pair, grading a solid Very Fine to its companion's Very Good-Fine. Neither example has been offered to collectors at public sale for decades, with Richard having obtained this note privately twenty years ago. Any estimate here is certainly a rank surmise, because when the hammer falls on this lot today the opportunity to obtain any large size $5 Legal star invert will likely have vanished for many years to come.
