    Description

Rare "Treasurer of the United State" Engraving Error

Fr. 227 $1 1899 Silver Certificate PMG Extremely Fine 40 EPQ.
When the fabled Albert Grinnell paper money collection was sold by Barney Bluestone in the 1940s, the sale included over one hundred error notes. Included in that group was a double-denomination note, which was referred to as the "King of Errors." However, also included in that offering was an error that Mr. Bluestone called "The Greatest Error in this Sale."
The error was on a Fr. 227 $1 Silver Certificate where the final letter "s" was omitted from the U. S. Treasurer's title so it read simply "Treasurer of the United State." Apparently, that final letter was inadvertently left off the "B" position of plate 2985 by the engraver for some unknown reason. At the time of the Grinnell sales, only one example of this interesting error had surfaced and Mr. Bluestone proclaimed that it was unlikely that another example would present itself. The error subsequently appeared in the 1954 ANA sale and has passed through several hands since that time.
However, Mr. Bluestone's prediction did not prove to be correct as another example surfaced some 30 years ago and appeared in a 1994 Superior sale. Tonight, that second example is being offered to a new generation of collectors. After microscopic examination, it can be determined that this is clearly an engraving error and not a partial obstruction that left just a touch of the final "s" to make it look like a period. Bearing the same plate number and plate position as the Grinnell note, this lightly handled Black Eagle exhibits original surfaces and just a few light storage folds. This is indeed an intriguing note for the error specialist or student of American financial history.
