Flood Pattern Ink Smear (Over Inking) on Face and Misaligned Black Overprint Error Fr. 1926-F $1 2001 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ.
An eye-catching error with both a flood pattern ink smear and a misaligned black overprint on the face. The former is more precisely known in this case as a partial pattern Test note from the press set-up operation. Any Test note patterns are extremely rare. Test notes are printed at the start of each printing shift to test the printing press. The sheet of notes should next be removed from the press and destroyed. This example evaded that course of action and was able to slip into circulation. After only a few folds, it was then found and carefully put aside. More information on test notes can be gleaned from page 67 of, United States Paper Money Errors fourth edition by Dr. Frederick J. Bart. Dr. Bart relates that only three face examples are known of this over inking.
