    HB-98 EP-73 Reed-DO05 5¢ Dougan Extremely Fine.
The case is fully XF from the standpoint of wear and there is a fair amount of silvering behind the letters and the hat. The case has been very lightly cleaned but not polished and it is a perfectly acceptable light brass color. The stamp is nearly fully bright but the mica has a number of cracks and crazes in many different areas. Dougan is a very rare firm in this denomination. Reed's auction census shows 21 appearances of Five Cent Dougans, which of course includes multiple reappearances. He estimates the 5¢ to be an R-8+ (five to seven known). We are in agreement, as is the Hodder-Bowers reference and the Stack's June 2004 catalog.
