    Description

HB-98 EP-73 5¢ Dougan the Hatter Very Fine
John Dougan was the only customer of John Gault's that used an illustration on his encased postage, in this case a top hat. He ordered about 10,000 pieces with most in the 1¢ and 3¢ denominations. The 5¢ denomination is the second rarest behind the 10¢. Fred Reed lists this as a R-8 (5-7 known). This piece has an attractive brown case that has no major issues. The stamp is bright and the mica only has a small crack at the top and over Jefferson's nose. This is a very nice example of a difficult merchant and denomination.
