    Description

    HB-46 EP-64 Reed-BC05 5¢ Bailey & Co. Choice About New.
This is one of the very nicest Bailey encasements that we have had the pleasure of handling. It is considerably nicer than either of the two 5¢ Baileys Fred Mayer's landmark collection which we sold in September of 2007. The case is a lustrous two-tone brown, golden near the center and chestnut toward the outer edges. The stamp is fully fresh and very nicely centered, and the mica is perfect save for an extremely minor craze across Jefferson's jacket. Of the eight Bailey pieces in the Mayer Sale, only two were this nice. Fred Reed rates this piece as an R-8; indicating five to ten known. Our impression, over decades in dealing in these, is that that is a touch low. There are probably ten or twelve 5¢ Bailey pieces known. Bill Kelly purchased this piece in a West Coast mail bid sale in November of 1999 for $2,300.
