DescriptionHB-27 EP-4 Reed-AS01SM 1¢ Ayer's Sarsaparilla Small Ayer's Choice About New.
The case is spectacular, totally free of flaws, glossy and with a touch of silver remaining at the center. This is the Western Collection piece. It was graded Choice Very Fine as their approach was to roll the entire piece into a single grade. We grade the wear on the case as if it were a coin and then describe the stamp and mica separately. Neither technique is more correct, simply different. In this case, the mica and stamp are indeed detractions. The mica itself has some soiling of the surface, although otherwise sound. The stamp is somewhat toned and lightly soiled. These small Ayer's pieces are by far the rarest of the three sizes. Reed considers this to be an R-4, 31 to 40 examples known. We think this is a touch on the high side, with the actual count in the mid twenties.
