    HB-218 EP-92 5¢ John Shilito & Co. Very Fine.
John Shilito & Co. was a dry goods store in Cincinnati and was one of four dry goods merchants who purchased advertising space on John Gault's New Metallic Currency in 1862. Mr. Shilito was responsible for bringing the department store to the frontier. This piece has a dark brown case that is very dark around the wording on the back. No signs of tampering are seen. The mica on the face is intact, with just two small cracks at the top. The stamp is undamaged and bright. It is listed as an R-4 in the Reed reference, 31-40 known, but this is only the second piece of this merchant and denomination we have had in any of our auctions.
