    Description

    Extremely Rare 5¢ B. F. Miles Encased

    HB-183 EP-86 5¢ B. F. Miles Fine.
Many great collectors have been unsuccessful in locating an example from B.F. Miles, Peoria, necessary for completing a set of Encased Postage issuers. This piece represents a key opportunity for specialists, now coming to the market after multiple decades in the distinguished Newman Collection cabinet. The Five Cent Miles is the "collectible" denomination, rated by Reed as a Rarity-8, indicating five to ten known. There is a lamination in the mica over a stamp with fairly bright color. There is also a small piece of mica measuring approximately 2mm by 2mm in an irregular form that is missing. The case is toned a bit darkly and has even wear. The Ford and Mayer-Perl examples were significantly finer than this, but they realized $14,950 and $27,600 respectively (that example, by far the finest extant). This example appears to be superior to the Raymond M. Waltz Collection example that realized $6,325 at the 2012 ANA sale. Miles is rarely offered and has been the domain of the most astute and advanced collectors of Encased Postage.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
