DescriptionHB-151 EP-81 Reed-IH05 5¢ Irving House Hunt & Nash Extremely Fine.
This is the very rare five cent variety with the plain frame which Reed considers to be an R-8 with under ten examples known. Five Cent Irving House pieces are far more common with the ribbed frame (R-4). This is the finest example of its type that we have seen. It traces its history to the Stack's 2004 Sale of the Western Collection where it was obtained by Bill Kelly as lot 521. In our sale of the Mayer Collection, we referred to his example as second in condition to this piece. As with most Irving House pieces, the brass is a lighter color. On this one, only very minor traces of circulation can be seen. The stamp is fully bright and beautifully centered and the mica is simply as perfect as can ever be found. A rare piece in extraordinary condition!
