High Grade 5¢ L. C. Hopkins & Co. - One of Approximately Five Known

    HB-145 EP-80 Reed-HO05 5¢ L. C. Hopkins & Co. About New.
An extremely rare piece, considered an R-8+, indicating five to seven known by Reed. The cataloger of the Stack's '04 sale, which also had a lovely example, stated, "Extremely rare: we suspect there are only about five of these known." We know of five. Strangely three of the five are well silvered and very high grade. The Mayer collection piece is the finest by a small margin. The Western Collection and this piece seem tied for second. The case has a very high percentage of original silvering on the back; the stamp is beautifully centered and fully bright and the mica is very substantially clear with just minor natural separations in a few areas visible when the piece is rotated in the light.
