    Description

Important and Desired 90¢ J. Gault

HB-141 EP-186 90¢ J. Gault Very Fine to Extremely Fine.
This is the most important and highest Encased Postage denomination, essential for a basic denomination type set. The Ninety Cents J. Gault is considered a Rarity-8 by Reed, indicating five to ten examples known. If a full census were compiled, the figure might approach ten. However, these pieces are rarely offered for sale and have always been coveted by specialists and Civil War token collectors. The vibrant stamp is rotated in the case, but it is under generally good mica with only one longer scratch seen. The case is glossy, though with some minor marks. The choice Raymond M. Waltz-Josiah Lilly piece realized $9,775 in August 2012. Although not as fine as the Judge Kelly piece or the exceptional Mayer collection example we have sold, it is the first we have offered in five years and boasts the famous Newman pedigree.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
