    HB-117 EP-44 Reed-EV03 3¢ G.G. Evans About New.
The mica has a "pushed in" appearance, which is very typical for Evans pieces, as they lack the cardboard behind the stamp. Reed considers this to be an R-7, the same as the One Cent piece. In our opinion, these 3¢ Evans are quite a bit scarcer than the One Cent. Reed's auction census indicates comparable rarity (One Cent = 53 appearances; Three Cent = 48 appearances), yet Three Cent pieces are rarely seen. The Hodder-Bowers book believes about 20 One Cent examples exist, but that the 3¢ is represented by "Fewer than ten, probably around six." We tend to believe the Hodder-Bowers reference to be the closer to accurate in this instance. The stamp is reasonably bright, the mica variously cracked and crazed, having been pushed-in in this hollow encasement. The case is virtually as-made, with original color behind all the letters.
