    T41 $100 1862 Cr. UNL.
Part of a cache of notes that spent the Civil War in the strong box of a wealthy Augusta, GA planter by the name of William Nathaniel Mercier, this $100 probably only saw the light of day three times on January 1, 1863, 1864, and 1865 when the notes were removed from the box, had their interest paid and were stamped on the back to record the event. Then back into the box they went for another year. The strong box, which held 790 of these "Hoer" notes plus a $1,000 Montgomery issue, remained sealed for over 130 years until the family finally pried it open in 1998 and ultimately sold the contents. This example has a letter T in the field just to the left of the central vignette. PCGS grades it Superb Gem New 67PPQ.
