    Description

Well Inked and Fresh $50 T4

    T4 $50 1861 PF-2 Cr. 4.
The central vignette on this note, like all of the other vignettes used on all four Montgomery issues, is a pre-war design depicting slaves hoeing. It appeared on state banknotes as well as later on the T41 $100 CSA Treasury Note. This note is part of a hurried second shipment of 1000 two-subject $50-$100 sheets made from New York after the commencement of hostilities around April 22-24, 1861. Had the captain of the ship transporting these complied with orders from federal authorities on the dock not to sail, these notes would have been confiscated. As things turned out, they arrived safely in Montgomery, AL around May 1, 1861. The back of this note bears a Military endorsement indicating that Capt. Thomas K. Jackson issued this to the field on July 16, 1861. We believe that Jackson was a West Point graduate who resigned his commission and joined the Confederate army at the beginning of the War. He was later associated with the Commissary Department. PMG grades this note Choice Very Fine 35. A pleasant note that is well inked on bright paper, with strong signatures and a military field endorsement.
