    T3 $100 1861 PF-2 Cr. 3 PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
    This example was part of the second shipment of 1,000 two-subject sheet notes that was nearly confiscated by federal authorities in New York City in April, 1861. National Bank Note Company used two stock vignettes for this denomination. The locomotive pulling into the station is a vignette used on a number of state bank issues both Northern and Southern before and during the war. The other vignette is entitled America and again was used on a number of antebellum state bank issues. The NBNCo made several subtle adjustments to the vignette from its pre-war appearance. Many of the stars on the drapery were either removed or muted so as not to give the illusion of a "star spangled banner," and the shield by America's right hand was modified to have fewer and wider bars than the original, blurring the concept of a federal shield. Later when this vignette was used for T41 $100s, the Liberty Cap and the fasces, symbol of strength through union, were removed entirely. An endorsement on the back by CSA Assistant Treasurer at New Orleans A.J. Guirot is dated June 5, 1861. This is followed by a couple of other endorsements. A nicely executed restoration along the right edge is observed and it remains a pleasing example of the type.
