    Description

A9 Plate Unimpaired PCGS Very Fine 20 - Top Condition for This Type

    T27 $10 1861 Cr. 222.
The plate mate to the Indian Princess $5, this $10 was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig based on a plate donated by the Bank of Charleston to the Treasury in 1861. This example has a plate letter/number of A9 and is excessively rare, with one authority indicating that five examples of this plate letter/number are currently reported.
This note first appeared in a NASCA sale on March 31, 1989 and was purchased by Arnold Cowan, the noted California variety collector, for $825. It again became available when Cowan's estate sale took place in 1998 at R.M. Smythe & Co.'s Memphis sale where it appeared as Lot 1387, realizing $10,450 after being purchased by our Consignor.
This type, like the Indian Princess $5, is notorious for only being available in lower or impaired condition. PCGS grades this rarity Very Fine 20 with no impairments noted. If you want one of the top condition notes available for this type then this is your opportunity. Someone is going to be very happy to take this home tonight and add their name to the pedigree for this special note.
