    Rare "NY" Countermark T21 $20

    T21 $20 1861 PF-2 Cr. 149.
Fricke and Criswell are in agreement on this "NY" countermark (a darker than usual watermark) rarity as Fricke rates his PF-2 as a R-11, 11 to 20 known, and Criswell cites his 149 as "ex(tremely) rare." The countermark is not translucent, so putting the note in front of a light source will become a grand study in futility. The best way to view the countermark is to lay the note on its back on a dark surface and have the light source to the side. Amazement will overcome all as the dark and large script "NY" countermark will magically appear. One ream of this countermarked paper was smuggled into the South early during the war. This paper was split unevenly between T21s (20%) and T24s (80%). Fricke states that only a total of 60 PF-2s were issued. Tonight's attractive example is one of the nicer pieces that has survived. It once resided in the John Ford Collection, lot 4426. Before that sale, it was part of the N.Y.-N.J. Auction Sales public auction of September 13, 1958. The white "paper coin envelope" lot identifier for the 1958 sale is included and therefore there are two items in this lot. The net grade is for a small tape repair to a tear that was caused by the punch hole cancel. PMG Very Fine 30 Net. (Total: 2 items)
