Confederate Type 2 $500
T2 $500 1861 PF-1 Cr. 2.An always popular and sought-after Confederate type note, this $500 was part of the original shipment of 607 sheets of notes shipped and received in Montgomery on April 2, 1861, ten days before the commencement of hostilities. Southern banker and Confederate agent G.B. Lamar had made arrangements with ABNCo to have these Treasury Notes as well as coupon bonds and transferable certificates of stock designed and printed in early March 1861. Due to the time constraints, ABNCo subcontracted out the Treasury Notes (the smallest part of the order) to National Bank Note Company, who expedited the design process by using all pre-war vignettes that were on hand. Turnaround time on this initial order was less than four weeks.
The most recent census of serial numbers suggests that there are approximately 120 surviving examples of the $500.
PMG grades this example Very Fine 20 Net, noting that three small punch cancels and a pinhole or small body hole have been covered on the back. These cancels are located at the five o'clock position on the right counter, between the two 0s in the numeral 500 in that counter, and just above Ceres' hip on the left end of the note. The small pinhole patch is to the left of the D in the left counter at the seven o'clock position. There is a period endorsement on the back in red ink, apparently dating from 1862, that merits further research.
