    Description

    T12 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 49.
Faced with mounting demand for currency, Secretary Memminger was soon scrounging the South looking for capable printers of any reasonable skill level. As a result, the New Orleans printer Jules Manouvrier received a contract to print $5 and $10 notes. Although this resulted in the only Confederate Treasury Note with absolutely no vignettes, the $5 was the first note to have a back design. Manouvrier was better at printing notes than shipping them. His shipment of notes to Richmond was hijacked, and some of the $10 notes were "liberated." While all of these were reportedly retrieved, the Treasury was so unhappy that they withdrew the $10s from being issued and then cancelled Manouvrier's contract. 15,556 notes were issued, and today, they are one of the keys to building a type set. PMG grades this example Very Fine 25, although it cites a foreign substance that is apparently a black speck between the F and E in CONFEDERATE on the back.
