    T11 $5 1861 Cr. 44 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
This is a vibrant example of the lowest denomination from the July 25, 1861 issue and was non-interest bearing. This was the first $5 issued by the Confederacy, and it was immediately required for commerce. Printed on thick bond paper, it was subject to rapid splits and nicks upon entering commerce. High grade notes from the approximately 73,000 printed are quite rare. The center vignette is similar to that on the T10 $10 denomination, with a seated Liberty and an eagle. Instead of a shield showing the Confederate flag, a large "5" counter is in front on the $5. At lower left, a sailor is shown at a wharf. As he leans on a capstan, he gestures toward Liberty. Vignettes were adapted from Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson engraved scenes. This piece is plated on page 93 in Criswell's 1996 Confederate reference. PCGS cites repaired splits and tears. These appear to be mainly confined to the top and bottom margin. As a result, this example faces up very well and will be a quite presentable for someone's collection.
