    T10 $10 1861 Cr. 35
The July 25, 1861 $10 notes did not pay interest and were lithographed by Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, having many varieties. The interesting design shows seated Liberty at the top center with an eagle and a shield bearing a Confederate flag. Standing Commerce is at the lower left. Different 10 dies are in three corners. The vignette adaptations, except for the addition of the Confederate flag, were taken directly from Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson intaglio notes from before the War. High-graded notes are rare, especially with the thick paper used. This note's provenance goes back to Raphael Thian, a government employee whose tasks included putting together presentation books of Confederate currency for dignitaries. This scrapbook remained with the family of the original recipient for a number of years and then went through a series of sales that culminated in Mr. Hilton acquiring the collection from Charles Anderson, Jr. in 1998, when he paid $1500 for this note. PCGS grades this example Apparent Very Fine 35 due to repaired edge splits and tears which do not have any significant impact on this note's desirability.
