Description

Washington, AR- $1000 Exchange Certificate 1864.
This is a very interesting and rarely seen piece of Confederate financial history. Exchange Certificate No. 4517 C.S. Depositary's Office Washington 1864. This certifies that Ezekiel Kinsworthy has deposited in this office, fifteen hundred dollars of "Old Issue" Treasury Notes, to be exchanged, on his order, for two-thirds of that sum in "New Issue" notes, under Act of Congress of 17th of Feb'y, 1864, when this office shall be supplied with funds for the purpose, and on surrender of this certificate. Value $1000 New Issue. "New Issue" notes (the February 17, 1864 issue) were exchanged at a lesser rate for older notes as an attempt to curb inflation. Mr. Kinsworthy must have never surrendered this certificate to get his money, thus a boon for today's collectors. We have been able to offer only two of these, this example and a Bonham, TX example in the same grade that brought $517 in September 2008. Edw(ard) Cross was the Depositary at Washington, Arkansas. This and the Bonham piece were printed by E.M. Cushing & Co. in Houston. Very Fine.
