DescriptionMarshall, (TX) - $100 "Old Issue/ $56.67 "New Issue" Exchange Certificate Dec. 24, 1864.
This is a very interesting and rarely seen piece of Trans-Mississippi Confederate financial history. Exchange Certificate No. 1305 C.S. Depositary's Office Marshall 24 Decbr 1864. This certifies that O.L. Holmes has deposited in this office, one hundred dollars of "Old Issue" Treasury Notes, to be exchanged, on his order, for Two-Thirds of that sum in "New Issue" notes, under Act of Congress of 17th of Feb'y, 1864, when this office shall be supplied with funds for the purpose, and on surrender of this Certificate. Value $56.67 New Issue. C.S. Depositary ?? Hull" and printed by E.H. Cushing & Co. of Houston. "New Issue" notes (the February 17, 1864 issue) were exchanged at a lesser rate for older notes as an attempt to curb inflation. Oscar L. Holmes endorsed this certificate on the back. We have offered only four of these in the past with the least winning bid being $299. Very Good with several edge tears and notches plus pinholes and a weak paper spot.
