DescriptionInterim Depository Receipt Marshall, (TX)- $58.67 Dec. 24, 1864 Tremmell TX-62.
This is a very interesting and rarely seen piece of Trans-Mississippi Confederate financial history. It reads, "Exchange Certificate No. 1305 C.S. Depositary's Office Marshall 24 Decbr 1864. This certifies that O.L. Holmes has deposited in this office, One hundred dollars of 'Old Issue' Treasury Notes, to be exchanged, on his order, for Two-Thirds of that sum in 'New Issue' notes, under Act of Congress of 17th of Feb'y, 1864, when this office shall be supplied with funds for the purpose, and on surrender of this Certificate. Value $56.67 New Issue. M.J. Hall C.S. Depositary." It was printed by E.H. Cushing & Co. of Houston. "New Issue" notes (the February 17, 1864 issue) were exchanged at a lesser rate for older notes as an attempt to curb inflation. Oscar L. Holmes endorsed this certificate on the back. We have offered very few IDRs on Texas locations. Very Good, with several edge tears and notches plus pinholes, a weak paper spot, and ink erosion in Hall's signature.
