DescriptionInterim Depositary Receipt Marietta, (GA)- $9000 Mar. 25, 1864 Tremmel GA-94 Richmond Type II.
Most of the handling is found near the left and right edges on this Very Fine IDR. Depositary Jesse Thomas performed similar duties earlier at Chattanooga. The payer is Roswell Manufacturing Company in Roswell, Georgia, a leading supplier to the Confederate Army. Sherman's March to the Sea found itself at the company's door step. However, Theophile Roche, a French citizen, had raised a French flag over the mills to disguise their purpose. This was to no avail. Today, the Lost Mill Workers of Roswell monument is located in Old Mill Park. It pays tribute to the sacrifices of the mill workers. It is a 10-foot tall shattered granite Corinthian column. The shattered column symbolizes the lives that were torn asunder by the Civil War.
