DescriptionInterim Depositary Receipt Marietta, GA- $30,000 Mar. 18, 1864 Tremmel GA-90a.
A rare Tremmel number designated as a R11 with eleven to twenty examples known. Depositary Jesse Thomas performed similar duties earlier at Chattanooga. The payer of this large amount was the Roswell Manufacturing Company in Roswell, Georgia, a leading supplier to the Confederate Army. Sherman's March to the Sea found itself at the company's door step. However, Theophile Roche, a French citizen, had raised a French flag over the mills to disguise their purpose. This was to no avail. Today, the Lost Mill Workers of Roswell monument is located in Old Mill Park. It pays tribute to the sacrifices of the mill workers. It is a 10-foot tall shattered granite Corinthian column. The shattered column symbolizes the lives that were torn asunder by the Civil War. Very Fine+.
