Confederate Treasury War Check $500,000 Mar. 8, 1865.
The Confederate war machine kept working to the very end as this check made it from Richmond to the office of Depositary T(haddeus) Sanford so that he could get the funds to Major and Quartermaster A.B. Cooke. Sanford accomplished this at Columbus, Georgia on April 7, 1865. Lee would surrender two days later to start the fall of the dominoes. The check is signed by Treasurer John N. Hendren, Register of the Treasury Robert Tyler, and Depositary T. Sanford of Montgomery. A cut cancel each is found through both Hendren's and Tyler's signatures. An edge piece has been dislodged from Tyler's signature which also includes ink smearing. A small piece is also missing from the bottom edge and we see a few edge tears in varying lengths up to approximately one inch in length. A great item from the waning days of the Confederacy. Very Fine.
