DescriptionChemicograph Backs Intended for Confederate Currency.
This lot has three examples of both the $5 and $20 denominations in red , blue, and black ink. The $5s grade XF or better and the $20s grade VF-XF or better. Back plates with these designs (and for the $10, $50, $100, and $500 denominations) were ordered by the Confederate Treasury from S. Straker & Sons of London. The plates were made and shipped from London in early January 1864, only to disappear. Several more shipments were made, but none were able to get through the Union blockade. Examples of the plates were found 75 years later and the prints in this lot were made from these plates. Next, the plates were donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
