DescriptionBall Page 280 (2nd Edition) Cr. 175 $100,000 Scrip Certificate for Confederate Bondholders in England.
This is reminder of the ill-fated 1880s attempt by an English consortium to profit by having the United States government pay outstanding debts of the Confederacy. Those who deposited their bonds with the consortium received certificates that would allow them to reclaim their bonds in the future. This example grades a nice Very Fine. We have offered very few Scrip Certificates over the years. This current example is tied with only one of our previous offerings for the highest denomination to appear in our auctions. That earlier piece grading Fine realized $161 in January 2006.
