Rare Ball 277 Four Per Cent Call Certificate

Ball 277 Cr. 137 $5000 1863 Four Per Cent Call Certificate.
Ball 277 is known only as a remainder as all issued pieces were redeemed and destroyed. It would appear that the handwritten elements on this example were applied at a later date. Ball estimates a population of only 4-10 extant and that figure includes proofs. There is no imprint on this piece, but these certificates were the work of Geo. Dunn & Compy. Richmond, VA. Dunn & Co., formed in 1863, was the main producer of CSA stocks and bonds. Dunn, a native of Scotland, was hired in London in 1861 by Major Benjamin F. Evans and was likely given a three-year contract as was typically the case with the engravers hired by the Confederate States government. In some cases, Dunn performed the engraving work and the bonds and other materials were actually printed by other firms. It is believed that he returned to Great Britain after the war. The Fort Sumter vignette found on this piece appears in a modified version on the Confederate States $2,000,000 Treasury Draft also being offered in this sale. PMG graded this $5000 Four Per Cent Call Certificate as Fine 12 Net, with PMG failing to list the reason for the net grade, although it probably isn't necessary as the note displays areas of staining, a tear at the top margin, and portions of the left margin missing outside of the design. A rare piece no matter what the grade, with very few examples available to collectors.
