High Grade 1861 $50 Confederate Bond Ball 10 Cr. 1

    Ball 10 Cr. 1 $50 1861 Bond PMG About Uncirculated 55.
This is one of only 250 bonds issued for this Montgomery type. Very few of those remain for the collectors of today. The last example we offered was way back in 2007. The bonds of this 1861 issue have the American Bank Note Co. New Orleans imprint, though they were actually printed at the company's New York office. This piece likely ranks up there as one of the nicest surviving examples for the issue. The portrait is of Howell Cobb, president of the Confederate Provisional Congress. This bond is signed by Register of the Treasury Alex(ander) B. Clitherall. When the Confederate capital moved to Richmond in July 1861, Clitherall decided to resign and stay in his home state. Therefore Clitherall's signature is only found on the Montgomery issues of the act of Congress February 28, 1861 dated bonds.
