On April 27, 1862 the Confederate blockade runner Bermuda was captured by the USS Mercedita and taken to Philadelphia. The Bermuda's cargo included a shipment of bank note paper bound for the Confederacy. The cargo was ordered sold by the Federal Courts. The Treasury Department purchased most of the "CSA" watermarked bank note paper and used it to print Fractional Currency specimen notes of the Second and Third issues. This example measures approximately 6.75 by 4 inches. Uncirculated.
