G(eorge) W. C(aldwell) Military Endorsement McNeil Plate Note T41 $100 1862 PF-12 Cr 317A.Printed on paper watermarked CSA in vertical block letters, this T41 $100 has one of the more obscure military endorsements on the back, embodied in the following annotation: "Issued Apl 2d, 1863 / GWC." GWC has been identified as Captain and Assistant Quarter Master George W. Caldwell. It is speculated that this note was probably issued by Caldwell in Monroe, Louisiana, although there is no hard evidence to support that conclusion. This note is used to illustrate Caldwell's initials on page 163 in McNeil's 2016 work covering such signers, Confederate Quartermasters, Commissaries, and Agents. PMG Very Fine 30.
