Facsimile T68 $10 1864 Dr. Seth Arnold's Cough Killer Ad Note.
Dr. Seth Arnold (1799-1844) began his medicine business
in New London, Connecticut in the 1840s. The Cough Killer was marketed beginning in 1842. Seth Arnold, Jr. (1857-1927) established the Dr. Seth Arnold Medical Corporation in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This advertising note was printed by the E.B. Best Mfg. Co., New Haven, Connecticut. On the back of the advertising note is an offer that if you save the Maltese Cross centers from the outside boxes of Cough Killer, these crosses could be exchanged for premiums from the company. At each end of the back there is a vertical statement for a different medicine. At one end is, "Arnold's Anti-bilious Pills Cure" for stomach and liver ills. "Lincoln's Hop and Celery Nerve Tablets", fill a long-felt want and is at the other end. According to the Homes Commission of the American Medical Association, the active ingredient in Dr. Seth Arnold's Cough Killer was morphine. Very Fine.
