    Facsimile T68 $10 1864 Ad Note.
Leslie E. Keeley (1834-1900) was an 1864 graduate of Rush Medical College in Chicago. He joined the Union Army as a surgeon. At the end of the Civil War, he settled in Dwight, Illinois. First, he was a surgeon for the Chicago and Alton Railroad. Later, he opened a clinic, the Keeley Institute, in order to treat alcohol, smoking, and drug addiction. His method was billed as the "Double Chloride of Gold Cure," that consisted of four hypodermic injections daily of his secret formula which was said to contain gold, supplemented by "regular patterns of sleep, regular and balanced meals, regular consumption of water, abstinence from tobacco and caffeine drinks, healthy recreation, and care in the selection of personal associates." His pledge was, "Drunkenness is a disease and I can cure it." He met with a tremendous amount of success and soon he had the idea of franchising the institute. At its peak of popularity, there were said to have been two hundred locations worldwide. Eventually, the medical profession turned against his secrecy and his methods. In 1881 the Illinois State Board of Health revoked Dr. Keeley's medical license and the fortunes of the institutes started to reverse themselves, but not before Dr. Keeley became a very wealthy man.
